Types of Eating Disorder Treatment in New Jersey

Psychotherapy

If a person feels that their eating disorder is out of control, it might be time to seek therapy for an eating disorder. Psychotherapy and medication can effectively treat adults with bulimia nervosa and those suffering from binge-eating disorder (sometimes called compulsive overeating).

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) helps people change their negative thought patterns and behaviors that can trigger binging or purging. The goal is to become aware of these thoughts and feelings to manage them effectively.

Nutrition Counseling

Eating disorders are mental illnesses that require a team approach to treatment. Nutritional counseling can help restore your body’s nutritional balance, which is one way to help overcome an eating disorder.

A dietitian can help you understand how certain foods affect your body and make recommendations based on your goals (which could include losing weight or changing your body composition). And if you need help to regulate hunger and food intake, a psychologist with specialized training in behavioral modification might guide you. We often recommend inpatient treatment for anorexia or bulimia since both disorders can cause serious health problems requiring intense medical supervision.

Medications

Eating disorders, like anorexia and bulimia, are serious mental illnesses. There are several drugs used to treat eating disorders: antipsychotics, antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and anti-anxiety medications are often used in eating disorder treatment plans. Suppose a person has had an eating disorder for over five years or has other co-occurring mental illnesses (such as depression or substance abuse). In that case, their doctor might recommend medications to ensure that they don’t slip back into disordered behavior.

Maudsley Approach

The Maudsley approach, often referred to as family therapy, is a type of psychotherapy that works with both parents and their children. Maudsley Family Therapy is an empirically-proven method for treating anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Christopher Dare and colleagues at the Maudsley Hospital in London first developed it. They believed it was important for parents to work together with medical professionals to change their child's behavior, especially when dealing with Anorexia treatment.
